Encore's 2002 Spring Haul Out
Monday, April 1, 2002
09:15 - left Beaufort Docks
09:35 - cleared Morehead City drawbridge.
10:40 - arrived Bock's Marine Services.
11:00 - hauled, pressure washed and blocked in yard.
This was an unsettled day with gusty winds. There was one shallow spot in the waterway but this seemed to be from silting and we never touched bottom. Otherwise it was an uneventful trip. The staff at Bock's seemed totally competent and experienced and were friendly to boot. We assisted in positioning the boat for the travel lift and Bock's staff asked us about lift points, etc. as the slings were being positioned. The haul was a very smooth job with no fire drills. The yardman who did the pressure washing told us that he believed we needed a new cutlass bearing. My inspection confirmed his suggestion.
Encore's bottom paint was in better shape than I expected it to be and we found no unexpected damage or additional required maintenance.

This morning around 11 AM I arrived at Bock's to find that they had already installed a new cutlass bearing and completed the final cleaning, bottom preparation and sanding. We ordered a modern multi-season ablative bottom paint for the hull.

This morning around 10 AM I arrived at Bock's, found all in order but no additional work done. Guess we were waiting for the arrival of the paint. Since I was staying with relatives while the work's being done rather than staying aboard and wanted to get some things from the boat I had to ask one of the yard workers where I could find a ladder. When I was done I returned the ladder. No reason to add to somebody else's work (and the billing!) unless you have to ...

I dropped by the yard around 11:30 AM and again found all in order but nothing new in the way of completed work. We're not scheduled for completion until Monday and there's plenty of time, I hope. Of course it is pretty cloudy today and it might rain. Good thing we planned in some extra time...

Today, when I visited the yard I found the painting almost done. Only the areas under the jackstand pads remained to be done.

Today I fixed two small scratches in the topsides and cleaned up a little. Bock's allows owners to do their own work and even to bring in outside contractors if they choose to do so. My work won't be professional looking but will seal the hull and keep Encore healthy until there's enough topside work to justify adding it to the maintenance list during a future haul out. We're scheduled to launch on Monday.

The phone number you have listed on the Bock's Marine page is wrong (I called and got Seagate Marina). The correct number is 252-728-6855.
